Ook First Lady Laura Bush ontkomt niet aan mijmeringen over de tweede termijn van haar man. Newsweek interviewde haar. De vrouw die het liefst op de achtergrond opereert, treedt de komende jaren meer naar voren, vooral om zich in te zetten voor jongeren die in gangs terecht dreigen te komen.
Verder ontkwam ook haar staf niet aan een reorganisatie en ontsloeg ze de chef-kok van het Witte Huis.
Over haar Helping America’s Youth initiatief:
“And, you know, we already know, of course, without knowing the real numbers, that boys are more likely to be involved in gangs, they’re more likely to end up in jail, they’re more likely to commit crimes or to actually have a crime committed against them. And all of those statistics are alarming. I also think that we’ve bought in, in our country, to the stereotype about boys that boys don’t cry and boys should be totally self-reliant, that somehow they don’t need the same nurturing and protection that girls get. And we all know intuitively that that’s wrong, you know, that all children, boys and girls, need protection and nurturing …”
Over de zoektocht naar een nieuwe kok:
“I’m looking for somebody who can really showcase American foods. This is a very interesting job for chefs right now, especially because chefs have become such celebrities in the United States. And obviously those chefs who already have a lot of cookbooks, who already have television shows, wouldn’t want to be the White House chef …
We like spicy food of all kinds. We like, obviously, Tex-Mex and barbecue … We like all sorts of foods. George is a very good eater.”
Wie de documentaire Journeys with George heeft gezien, weet dat de president dol is op peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches en broodjes met worst. Hamburgers zijn ook populair, dus met een kok uit de Burger King komt het Witte Huis volgens mij al een heel eind.
Over het sociale leven in Washington:
“We actually do go to dinner parties. As you know, we go to our friends’ dinner parties. But to be—we don’t actually get invited to that many dinner parties. I think people think we’re going to invite them. Which we do.”
